*Fort Ross, Sonoma CA May 28, 1948*
Dear Mother,
I am sure you heard by now that California has become part of the U.S. I feel like I have been tossed to the side with nothing to gain. I lost some land and now I am living at Fort Ross. Many of the other Mexicans who were here with me have left, and now I am surrounded by travelers and terrible natives. I was supposed return home to Mexico earlier, but the fur trade has been somewhat profitable. Lately, I have not had much success though; in fact, I am running out of traps and resources. It does not matter to me if I give up the fur trade because that job is for the dirty natives anyway. My money is finally running low, and I think it is time to finally come home. I have chosen to become a citizen of the United States only because it was offered to me, but I do not want to be here forever. The U.S. has some plans here in California, and I have been noticing more and more Americans flooding in. I am thinking about leaving and returning in the next few months. I miss home and everyone in the family. Give them my best and I will see you all soon.
Love,
Juan Cena
[[walk outside to deliver letter]]*Juan walks outside and bumps into a white man he has never encountered before*
Stranger: “Hello sir my name is Pete, some people call me Stinky. I was wondering if you wanted to trade some fur to me so I can make a coat to help cover up my stench?”
Juan: “I do have some fur. What do you have to trade?”
Stinky Pete: “I’m running low on materials so I can't make anything, and I am just heading back towards my family. I was up in Eureka, were they have gold flowing like a river from those mountains up there. I guess I could offer you that...”
Juan: “Gold?! Sure, this should be enough fur to make a coat.”
*Juan continues to deliver his letter thinking, "Gold flowing like a river." He returns to his quarters contmplating whether Pete was lying or not, and if heading to Eureka could solve his money problems. Juan goes to sleep thinking about his family.*
[[continue|outbreak of commotion]]*HELP! FIRE! HELP! HELP!*
Juan wakes up to a small fire in Fort Ross just outside his barracks. Fur traders, and settlers are scrambling to grab water or anything to put the fire out.
Juan contemplates helping but sees an opportunity of a lifetime. Stinky Pete helps with the fire and his oxen and wagon full of mining supplies and his tent are left unsupervised.
With Stinky Pete's resources he can help his family back home, by going for the gold up north. He can finally stop doing the job Juan thinks is only for the inferior natives.
Juan runs over to Pete’s tent site and starts to rummage through all of Pete’s belongings searching for anything of value.
[[steal Stinky Pete's wagon]]
[[steal gold from Stinky Pete]]
[[go help with fire]]*Juan is now weary and the oxen are now growing restless and increasingly more difficult to control and keep straight along the trail to Eureka. Suddenly, one of the oxens harnesses breaks and the wagon falls on it side.*
*Juan falls on the ground and is knocked to the side.*
*A man with long hair and dark reddish skin fell from the back of the wagon.*
*Reddish skin man speaks native language that Juan can somewhat decipher and assumes the native is a Miwok.*
Juan: "Who are you!?"
*Juan scrambles to get to his feet and tackles the native as he was getting up. They start to wrestle, exchanging punches, bighting, and fighting for their lives. Juan wrestles the native off of him and quickly scrambles through all the wagons supplies.*
*The native gets up with his back against the one remaining ox. Juan finds an 1847 model revolver wrapped in some fabric.*
[[look at fabric]]
[[pull gun immediately|1847 model revolver]]*Juan jumps into the wagon and the oxen set off. Juan goes on his journey to Eureka in search of gold with Pete's supplies.*
*Pete turns and sees his oxen and wagon leaving without him and starts sprinting towards the wagon.*
Pete: “HEY SOMEONE IS LEAVIN WITH ME WAGON, I WILL FIND YOU AND HUNT YOU DOWN!”
*Even with Pete’s efforts the wagon left without him and Juan Cena would get away because he cannot be seen.*
[[begin journey|journal entry 1]]Juan sees a large pile of gold in Pete’s tent. He decides to steal this gold for himself to possibly fund his journey home or to Eureka. Juan is mesmerized by the gold and contemplates whether he will try to obtain more or go home.
[[go home]]
[[go for gold]]Juan goes home to Mexico and lives there with his family as a labor worker. He struggles financially because he did not get enough gold. For the remainder of his life he is happy to be with his family, but is not successful.
[[game over|steal gold from Stinky Pete]]He then decides that he is going to need more supplies if he is going to make it up to Eureka, so he is able to make some more money so he can send some back to his family in Mexico. Juan then heads towards the nearest general store north to purchase the supplies he will need.
[[purchase supplies and continue journey|journal entry 1]]
[[rest over night and begin journey the next day]]Juan points the gun at the native.
[[pull trigger]]
[[pistol whip & hogtie]]The gun jams. Juan is yanked towards the ox horn and is stabbed and killed by the Native.
[[game over]]*After knocking the native unconscious Juan proceeds by tying the native up and throwing him back into the wagon.*
Juan: “Stupid, redskin!”
*He spends the next couple hours trying to corral the oxen and turn the wagon up on its right side. After some time Juan is able to get his wagon back on the road, and continue his journey.*
*After traveling for a some portion of his journey Juan decides to stop, to set up camp, and relax. He starts by writing in his journal about his experience so far.*
[[journal|journal entry 2]] "I’ve been traveling along this beautiful coast on my way to Eureka. Maneuvering all this equipment and supplies has been hard with all the rocky coastal hills. This journey for gold has been a bit more difficult than I thought it would be too. A damn redskin tried hitching a ride on my wagon. I’m not sure how long he was riding in the back, but it came to my surprise anyone could hop along for a ride without being seen or heard. Good thing I have him tied up now, and he won’t be scaring my oxen no more. I just decided to keep him around because I thought he could possibly serve me some help, or I can sell him if someone were to offer a good price."
*Juan then closes his journal puts out the campfire and goes to [[sleep]]. Juan dies and never returns home to his family or gets rich.
[[game over|1847 model revolver]]*Juan opens a journal he found in Pete's wagon and begins to write his own passage.*
"I don't think taking Pete's belongings was the right thing to do, but what an opportunity. If Pete wouldn’t stop rambling on about all the gold in Eureka, I would have never heard about it. It's almost like he was advertising it to me and with the fire and everything I would be foolish not to sieze that moment. He’s gotta be losing his mind now.... This gold stuff will be much better for me than fur trapping has ever been. I’ve got to find a way to make more money and do well for my family. I cannot return home empty handed. This trip should not take me too long and hopefully I can return home soon. My God! That guy Pete smelled horrendous, this wagon still reeks of him!"
[[continue]] *Juan has now been traveling for a couple of days keeping the native alive to be sold to any miner in Eureka. Juan is still struggling with his oxen and is getting more and more tiresome as the days seem to go on, which fell like weeks for him. The native sees this as an opportunity to befriend Juan.*
Miwok Native: "You are tired and you need some sleep. Your oxen are hungry and aggetated and we will never get to Eureka this way."
*In a very sleepy voice*
Juan: "All of a sudden you can speak English now? Oh no you don’t, you're not talking your way out of this one you digger. You think you can catch me off guard and get out of that rope? NOT HAPPENING!"
Miwok Native: "Alright then, but we are on the trail that leads to the cliffs and it will be dangerous if the oxen are not steared well."
Juan: "Oh and you know how to handle these animals better than me?"
Miwok Native: "Back at Solano we worked with them all the time I can assist you if you would like."
[[leads oxen himself]]
[[ask the native for help]]After refusing to ask for help, Juan begins to lead the oxen down the narrow pathway. He dozes off while driving, slips, rolls down a cliff, and Juan and the Miwok fall to their death.
[[game over|sleep]]The Native steps in and leads the oxen across the dangerous narrow path. Once to safety, the Native rejoins Juan in the wagon and they find a safe spot to rest, Juan decides to write in his journal.
Miwok Native: "By the way this wagon stinks!"
[[journal|journal entry 3]]*Juan opens up his journal and begins to write...*
I never thought traveling to Eureka would be this hard. The oxen have been difficult to keep under wraps, they’re always so antsy. Luckily, that native was able to keep them calm while we were crossing a narrow path. I’m still not sure if I trust him, but I need to make it to Eureka. This journey has already taking several weeks, and who knows their may be many more Americans there to take all the gold. I still think we are perhaps a week away. I guess the bright side is how beautiful the forests and hills are around here. I feel like I may have made the right decision going North.
*Juan closes his journal. The Miwok native and him rest for the night.
[[go to sleep]]Juan stays the night in his wagon and heads out the next morning.
[[continue|journal entry 1]]*Pomo Native speaking native language and waking Juan up.*
*Juan wakes to 15 natives drawing weapons around him.*
Pomo Native: “What are you doing here?” “Haven’t you Americans done enough of our people!”
*Juan is scared and nervous."
Juan: “I meant no harm, I’m just passing through. I just became an American too.”
*Pomo Native raises his weapon to kill Juan.*
*The Miwok native jumps up from the wagon and stands between the Pomo native and Juan. He takes the Pomo natives to the side and begins talking with them.*
*Pomo Native looks at Juan briefly and quickly turns back to the Miwok and nods his head in agreement. The Pomos lower their weapons and turn back to Juan.*
Pomo Native: “You’re friend here says your helping your mother and family by seeking gold near Sutters Mill. That is a honorable thing to do especially after you lost all your land here, why even stay?”
*Juan nods his head reluctantly still trying to figure out what just happened between the Miwok and the Pomoan.*
Pomo Native: “Here take this.”
*Pomo native hands Juan a big fur coat, which confuses Juan.*
[[thank Pomoan|head to Eureka]]
[[do not accept coat]]
[[have native thank the Pomoan for you|head to Eureka]]
[[reach for gun]]*Clouds begin to form above them as they get closer to Eureka.*
Juan: “I ought to kill you for going through my journal, but that was a close one back there, and that's twice now you’ve saved me now. I owe you one.”
Miwok Native: “You didn’t kill me back in Sonoma and you trust me even though I am not like you, not to mention you are doing an honorable thing for your family. You are a decent man.”
Juan: “You know, you’re not a bad man yourself... for a redskin.”
Miwok Native: “My people call me Tuketu. After we fled the mission I changed my name to get away from those terrible people who would call me the same things you call me.”
*Juan feels incredibly guilty, disgruntled, conflicted, and is now reflecting on how he has been treating Tuketu and his view on natives in general. He regrets judging him poorly from the beginning just because he was a native.*
*Rain begins to poor down and Tuketu offers for them to stop and rest. But Juan is in a rush to Eureka because they are so close.*

[[keep going]]Juan dies trying to put out the small fire.

Tuketu thanks Juan and goes to sleep.
Juan uses this time to write a letter to his mother, and explain to her why he still has not gone home.

[[game over|pull over]]*Humbolt County, California June 30, 1848*
Dear madre,
I know in my last letter I said I would be returning to Mexico, but I met this smelly guy that told me all about this gold in north of where I was staying. I was struggling financially already, and the fur trade just wasn’t selling like it used to. So I decided to venture North in hopes of finding gold and being able to bring some back for us. Hopefully I’ll be able to last out here. Just this morning I was surrounded by what seemed like a whole native tribe; fortunately, I was able to escape with the help of a redskin that has been helping me out along the way. He seems to not be all that bad. He has saved me a few times, and prevented us from getting lost. This journey has truly changed me. I have lived in California as an angry man for so long hating natives and Americans. But this native I'm traveling with, Tuketu, has been nothing but great for me. I cannot believe I though of selling him. I'm so sorry I have not been able to write you. I know I was suppossed to be home by now, but I promise I will make this right for us. I will not make any empty promises, I will find gold and support us back home in Mexico.
Love,
Juan
[[sleep alongside Tuketu]]*Juan and Tuketu arrive in Eureka in the next several days, and they decide to go have drinks at a saloon to celebrate their treacherous journey.*
Bartender: “What will you gentleman have? The cheapest thing I have is water, beer, and some moonshine."
[[water]]
[[beer|alcohol]]
[[moonshine|alcohol]]Juan and Tuketu drink water tainted with cholera. Juan and Tuketu suffer from painful stomach illnesses and die before they can even abtain gold.
[[game over|sleep alongside Tuketu]] Bartender:”You two look like you’ve been through alot here is another… on the house.
[[accept one more drink]]After a few drinks you and Tuketu decide to venture off to find a good place near the area to begin mining, but they do not know which direction to go.
[[north|weast]]
[[east|weast]]*After finding what looked like a good spot to mine Juan and Tuketu get to work. A little while later they are approached by another miner.*
Stinky Pete: “What is that digger doing here? This is a land for Americans! Wait a minute...”
Juan: “Hey, we’ve got just as much right to be here as you do. I am now an American because the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo too you know.”
Stinky Pete: “Shut up, the United States purchased this land. Why don’t you go back to Mexico. Hey you're that guy who took my wagon, I said I would find you. Now you are using my stuff to get gold, meanwhile I have to start all over because of you.”
Tuketu: “We do not need any more trouble Juan lets leave, plus it smells over here.”
Stinky Pete: “What did you say?!”
[[make Juan step in]]*Juan decides to leave before Stinky Pete, Tuketu, and him escalate into a bigger altercation.*
Juan: "Lets just go somewhere else, we do not want any trouble.
[[Juan and Tuketu leave]]*Tuketu and Juan begin mining somewhere else, and after a while Juan feels the need to use the bathroom and decides to do his business behind a nearby bush.*
*In the middle of using the restroom Juan hears a noise coming from where they were mining and he rushes over to see what is happening. Stinky Pete was now beating ferociously on Tuketu.*
*Tuketu begins yelling.*
Tuketu: “Shoot him, Shoot him Juan!”
*Juan pulls out Pete's old gun and aims it at Tuketu and the Pete.*
[[shoot Pete in the arm|Tuketu Dies]]
[[shoot Pete in the head|Tuketu Dies]]
[[shoot Pete in the leg|Miner shot]]*Juan is an awful shot. In fact his shot is so bad that he shot and killed Tuketu. The Miner seems very pleased.*
Stinky Pete: “Thanks for taking care of that redskin. Take this as a token of my gratitude. Guess I won't have to kill ya after all huh?"
*Stinky Pete hands Juan some Gold.*
[[continue|end bad]]*Juan fires off a shot towards the miner.*
Stinky Pete: “AAW GOD OH GOD YOU ASSHOLE YOU'RE CHOOSING THIS REDSKIN OVER ME? YOU’LL HANG FOR THIS!”
*Tuketu bounces to his feet and stands behind Juan.*
Juan: "You would have killed us both if it were up to you. And he's my friend and we’ve gone through so much just for you to stop us."
*Juan puts his hand on Tuketu’s shoulder.*
Juan: “We’ve worked too hard to get to this point."
[[continue|end good]]Juan is attacked as he reaches for his gun and is killed by the Pomoan natives.
[[game over|go to sleep]]Juan and Tuketu let Stinky Pete leave and continue to achieve their fortune unbothered by anyone else. After months of hard work and good times together, Juan and Tuketu acquire so much gold. They reflect on ther journey from Fort Ross all the way to Eureka, and how many times they escaped death through their dangerous encounters with each other, nature, and the Pomo. After essentislly getting rich, Juan and Tuketu travel to San Fransisco where they depart as friends. Juan eventually finds his way back to Mexico and reunites with his family as a rich man.
The EndJuan is in disbelief and just stares at the gold. He struggles to achieve a fortune by himself, and stuggles emotionally because of what he did to Tuketu. He cannot work on his own and after months in Eureka he has not gotten much gold. Juan feels his journey has been wasted because of all the near death experiences he encountered, and how much Tuketu did for him. He loses the motivation of mining for his family, and decides to return to Mexico without much money because he is ashamed of killing his firend. Juan makes his way home by himself, but does not live long without help. He dies while being lost from the rigorous trek back to Mexico without ever seeing his family again.
The End*Clouds begin to form above them as they get closer to Eureka.*
[[pull over|2]]
[[keep going]]Tuketu: “Juan it is cold and I am miserable I don’t know how much longer I can take of this weather.”
Juan: “Me too, just be strong and we'll make it through.”
*Juan thinks about the coat the Pomoan gave him and regrets not accepting it. He and Tuketu get very sick from the rain and die of hypothermia as the rain continues.
