Nisenan

***In 1848, Native American tribes lived amongst eachother and lived a lifestyle in which they only used what was needed/given to them off the land they lived on to survive. The Nisenans were one of these tribes*** [[Nisenan tribe]]

***The Nisenans lived in Central Valley California as the chaos of the Gold rush began to unfold. They received the worst of the [[violence |Enter]] that ocurred during the gold rush era.***

***Hoku's father mysteriously fell ill after making contact with some white men. Cha'kwaina is a fierce 20 year old woman. She enjoys hunting, but has amazing basket weaving skills. [[Gather]] materials for her basket Go [[fishing]] and catch some delicious fish

**ACORNS are to Natives as Gold is to the 49ers. Tobey wants to collect a few more to give to his mother. Suddenly, he hears something. The noice is getting closer as his heart begans to race and his mind freezes up. What should he do?** [[Run Away]] [[Stay quiet]]

***Deer used to be easier to hunt. As more people arrive, there seems to be less land, crop, and wild animals to hunt. Tobey begins to get frustrated. The white man is changing their way of life. Tomorrow he will go [[fishing]] instead***

Tobey turns to run as fast as he can to get away when theres a click followed by a loud bang. There was a stinging pain his back as he falls to the ground. He tries to move, but the pain is too much. Tobey ducks down trying to quietly figure out what these newcomers were saying. He could tell they were up to no good. [[Remain]] quiet [[Run Away]]

***Hoku and Cha'kwina run into eachother while spearing for fish. Hoku: "Cha'kwina, you catch any?" Cha'kwina: "None yet" Hoku: "Have you only stayed in this area" Cha'kwina: "Yes" Hoku: "How about you try upstream and I will go down" Hoku points to his favorite fishing spot just around the river bend... Cha'kwina: "Ok.Meet back here at sundown" [[Upstream]] with Cha'kwina [[Downstream]] with Hoku***

**[[Hoku]] is a Nisenan male who is almost 16 years old. His dad had recently died due to an unknown cause and now wants to step up to the plate to protect his family. [[Cha'kwaina]] is a 20 year old Nisenan female. She enjoys weaving baskets with her family and fishing. Cha'kwaina is Hoku's older sister. [[Tobey]] is a 12 year old Native American male whom enjoys dressing as, and taking on roles, that of a female. **

***Cha'kwina enjoys fishing. Being able to carefully examine the fish movement takes practice and patience. She holds her spear waiting for the perfect moment and [[thrusts]] her spear into the water...***

Hoku spends all day trying to spear some fish. He hasnt caught one yet. Frustrated and defeated he goes for one more try before meeting back up with his sister. The sun was almost down and he wont be able to see the fish in the dark so he throws his spear into the water and hooks a nice big catfish. He is so excited and [[runs]] back to the meeting spot.

**Tobey is a Berdache and he is seen as a healer in his community. He just finished weaving 3 baskets and was tired. Thats when he sees his [[mother]].**

***Tobey was a good person. Hoku is distraught. He looks down to [[Read]] the euology. He looks over to see Tobey's mom holding his lifeless hand. Hoku cant be there anymore. It was too much pain. He decides to go [[Hunting|Hunt]], that always helps him feel better. ***

Back to [[funeral]]

**Tobey and his mother are really close. He could tell his mom was tired and wants to help her. She says she needs acorns and berries for their meal. [[Search]] for more acorns [[Locate|OR]] some delicious berries**

**Tobey knows the exact spot to [[gather]] up the berries needed for the meal his mom wants to make **

**He follows the path that takes him to the bush in which grows the sweetest berries. He is just about done filling his basket when he hears a noise in the distance** ***[[Run Away]] [[Stay quiet]] ***

*Tobey's friend, Hoku, attended his [[funeral]]. This is the second tragic death Hoku has dealt with in the year. Still trying to cope from his fathers sudden death, Hoku feel more passionate at trying to keep his tribe safe.*

*He slowly lifts his head up in time to see one of the men gesturing his way. Both of them start yelling and running after him. In fear, he turns to get [[away|loud bang]]...** <audio src="https://nisenan.yolasite.com/resources/Shotgun%20Sound%20Effect%20-%20Cocking%20and%20Shooting.mp3" autoplay>

***Suddenly, theres something covering her face and she cant see. A hand is over her mouth; preventing her from breathing. She becomes scared and tries to scream, but she cant. She panics which causes her to [[pass|passes]] out. ***

***Cha'kwina wakes up to her brother pouring water over her face. She doesnt know what happened, but feels very sore. Hoku carries her back [[home]].***

***It is now March 1949. Hoku told Cha'Kwina that she slipped on a rock and hit her head. He didnt want to cause her anymore suffering than what she went through She was doing better physically, but all of a sudden started to complain of [[abdominal]] cramping. ***

Excited about his only fish he caught, he ran back to meet up with his sister. She wasnt there yet, and the sun is now gone. Hoku thinks she doesnt have any yet and goes to [[look]] for her and claim his victory

Hoku knew where she went, their Dad's favorite spot to fish. But she wasnt there. He runs back to the meet up spot, she's not there either. Hoku begans to worry. She wouldn't give up on a competition, thats not like her. His heart starts to [[race]] as he thinks of all that could've happened to his older sister.

"Maybe she got pulled under and drowned in the water, or maybe she fell on the rocks and hit her head, or maybe she took a nap and she hasnt woken up yet" Hoku cant handle another death in his family. Thoughts run through his head as he continues to search for his sister. Thats when he [[finds]] her lifeless body

Cha'kwina was naked and laying on the ground; not moving. Hoku picks her up and carries her to the water. He gently lies her down and starts pouring water over her head. She opens to her eyes, confused about what happened. Hoku knows what happened, but he calmly, and gently, picks up his sister and carries her [[home]]

**Cha'kwaina is on bed rest. She is sweating and the pain is getting worse. They soon realized that the cramping was due to her about to have a baby. Once she pushed the baby out she felt tired immediately. As they laid the beautiful baby girl in her arms, Cha'kwaina closes her [[eyes]] and passes away. **

*It has been 6 months and there is a food shortage in his village, Hoku decided he has no other choice than to join the few tribe members that participated in the crazy search for a type of yellow [[rock|gold]]. He heard he will be given things in exchange for it which can help him bring in food for Angeni and the rest of the tribe*

***Hoku begans to pan for gold at a gold mill. He does well for the first 6 months. but as more people arrived, the harder it was to find [[gold|life]]. ***

***It seems that the gold is quickly disappearing as quickly as their crop fields had. In order to keep his family fed, Hoku must decide whether to continue to [[pan]] for gold, or to go find [[work]] in the white mans village***

***Life as a gold miner was rough. The days were long and it was getting harder to dig gold out of the walls. He didnt make his quota today and was whipped. He tried so hard and was feeling defeated. He slowly [[heads]] home***

*On the way to work one morning, Hoku was walking just around the river bend, when he notices a golden light within the water.He didnt want to believe it at first. His heart is pounding with excitement. He takes his bowie-knife and easily yanks out a big piece of [[gold|rock]].*

*Hoku puts the gold in his bag and runs home. He doesnt want the white man to see what he has. He goes to the village chief and tells them. They decide to hide the gold until they can choose the [[safest]] way to trade it.*

**Hoku was awoken late that night to yelling outside. "no!" he yells to himself. He grabs Angeni and hands her to his mother. He tells them to run as he will stay behind to try to [[fight off]] the white man.**

***He hugs Angeni, for the last time, slips the gold to his mother and watches them run to the woods. Once she was out of sight, he grabs his [[bow]] and arrow or [[bowie-knife]] .***

**Its dark outside. The white men are setting fire to their huts. Hoku doesnt understand how someone could be so cruel. To hurt another human being for no reason. His patience has run out. He wants [[vengeance|lives]]. **

***Hoku was shot while ducking in the bushes. Somehow they heard about the Gold and angry that the tribe "stole" from them. Back to [[Beginning]] What happened to [[Angeni|Cha]] ?

***Hoku found out yesterday that his friend, Tobey, was [[murdered|funeral]] while searching for berries. Another death. He cant shake the emotions that are overwhelming him. Fear of whats next. Guilt for not protecting him (or his dad). As well as anger and sadness. ***

**Hoku names the baby Angeni; meaning spirit angel. He has now been given a bigger meaning to his life and hopes to protect [[Angeni|daughter]] through these hard times**

**Angeni lived as indentured servant until she was 13, when she ran away along with two other native women, they fled across the river and into the woods and died of starvation within the following weeks. [[Home|Beginning]]**
